a zen koan for you

A Japanese youth was raised in the West, by Western adoptive parents. He knew not the language of his ancestors, nor the customs of their culture. Soon after reaching adulthood, he had befriended some American otaku, and one day he accompanied them to an animu convention. There, he met a great otaku master, a much-respected man, whose knowledge of Tezuka, Yokoyama and Ishinomori was as broad as the cosmos itself. Seeking for this master's counsel and advice, to this master the young man told his story,

"Weeaboo." the master said, and turned away, leaving the shocked youth staring at his back.

So this weekend I'm heading out to Jersey to borrow a car from the folks and then driving up Long Island for FUN TIMEZ with assorted weeaboos, some art school kids, and other associates of Anna (dressdragn). Anyone who's on my way or who can meet me on my way through NYC, wanna come? call/email/IM me for a better explanation of what's going on.

Yes, I only update anymore about things like this. I intend to get back to blogging sooner or later, once I take care of some things like how my apartment is falling apart and I'm way behind on updating Anna's site

Just finished Vonnegut's Mother Night, which I've had lying around for ages, and now I'm in the middle of a pristine hardcover copy of Michael Chabon's The Final Solution, a lucky find at the Salvation Army store on 125th on my way home wednesday or thursday.

Also, I probably haven't mentioned that I'm re-playing Final Fantasy 7 in order to form more informed opinions about it (and its sequel materials, over which much fuss is made). Anyway, I finally beat Ruby Weapon and Emerald Weapon this week, and from my exceedingly well-prepared POV, they were all sound and thunder. I'd post an amusing AIM conversation with ahvia regarding that, but I don't have it right now, I'll just paste it in here when I get home.

Listening to Regina Spektor's last couple albums a lot lately. It's uneven stuff but the tracks that stand out really shine. I've also actually been drawing a bit, and soon I might finish something for once. I also re-watched almost all of seasons one and two of Venture Brothers the other day... I don't remember why at first, but eventually I had to go through them again to find the parts where the Monarch talks to/about other supervillains. It took me quite a while to remember that my favorite scene, where he lists who a jury of his peers would consist of, was actually a deleted scene on the second s1 DVD. Anyway, I've been having things in Monarch-voice running through my head all day. And I just spent like 15 minutes putting in a million marquee tags in this entry. I think I'm done.

Okay so Wednesday and Thursday nights I got like three hours of sleep each night. Thursday, sorted through a bunch of my old Legos at the parents' house, and had Thanksgiving dinner with my parents and the uncles. Really missed not having my sister around, but, as I doubt I've actually mentioned in here yet, she's working in India for the next several months.

Another thing I probably neglected to mention - I recently discovered that much of my health problems in the last year or two seem to be the result of my developing lactose intolerance. This Thanksgiving I discovered that when the lactase pills say "take with the first bite of food", they really mean that first bite part. Eat half a piece of chocolate cake, then take the pill before finishing it? Still spend the next day wondering if I'm gonna throw up.

And that whole sickly Friday was spent bargain-hunting with my mom. It's become a tradition for us to participate in the ridiculous, crowded early-morning sales and I found some exceptional stuff, some extremely cheap DVDs/VHS/video games, useful art/hobby supplies, a gorgeous flat-panel monitor at an amazing price, and a brown pinstriped suit that is probably one of the most fly garments I could get away with wearing. Also I'm pretty sure I've lost weight, based on how well a smaller size of relatively slim cut jeans fit me.

A bunch of the video and video-game (mostly used) finds from Friday are shown below, inside the cut.
OF PARTICULAR INTEREST TO ahvia BECAUSE I AM A JERK BUT REALLY I AM GOING TO WATCH IT SERIOUSLY I HAVE TO NOW

Gamestop had this deal where if you buy their special edition of Final Fantasy 12 before noon Friday, they give you a $10 giftcard. And you can then immediately spend that giftcard on used games - and used games were buy two, get one free all Friday AND I found some stuff there in Jersey that I never see used around here.

Ok so anyway after getting back to NYC on Friday night I went to bed and slept for 24 hours. Seriously. It was insane. I woke up in the early morning today, barely realizing I'd skipped a day.

Today I saw The Fountain with roommate Chris and I was moderately disappointed. I guess it was worth seeing, but I found the pacing to be too slow and the whole sense of story was too disjointed. It's like Aronofsky set out to make a movie without a beginning or end, but instead it went end, middle, middle, beginning, middle, end, middle, end, end.

Man, web page/graphics work really is a drag. But I'm trying to get some content up, and a structure to easily slot in some more.

The new Achewood is brilliant.

Also, I am reading the Fullmetal Alchemist manga now, up to about chapter 40. Once I got into the mid-thirties, it seems that Hiromu Arakawa is intent on making me cry. Enjoying it, though.

No conclusion to this update. HOPEFULLY if I get that personal web stuff done I will find a new place for my blogging that will function as both a frontpage updates log and the kind of quick personal notes that I used to keep here.

So Halloween weekend up at Anna's on Long Island was pretty great and now I just want to go off into the woods or something. Sunday afternoon we took a brief trip down to a beach on the Sound of sea-smoothed pebbles and glacial boulders and I could've spent hours there but the wind was about a million mph. I would've spent more time outside in general, but mostly the people I was hanging around gave in and conceded defeat to the cold. :D
I like this picture way more than is warranted.

So, with Death Note weeks in the past, I turn to the still-ongoing Full Metal Alchemist manga. I don't expect to be as captured by the narrative as I was with the TV series, but I was interested in the general concepts of the series from the first glance, and I expect to enjoy it.

But I've predictably become fixated on getting as much FMA stuff as I can downloaded and organized, regardless of how pertinent any of it is to the main story.
I can't find scans (translated or otherwise) of several of the many side-stories and supplementary comics. Someone help me! I'm not holding my breath over the promo books that were included with certain of the collected reprint volumes, but I know there are translated scans of "The Blind Alchemist" (from the first Perfect Guidebook) out there. There's also the "Flame Alchemist" book included with volume 6, and the book of 4koma gag comics included with volume 12 - those seem like the kind of thing that people would scan and translate.

There are also some other FMA-related publications which I have no idea of the content of... I read something vague about there being side-story materials related to the PS2 games (though that might have just referred to the games' stories)... no one seems to have clear info on whether the "Book In Figure BLACK" set was ever released, and whether it included a comic story like the red and blue volumes did... Aaaand the scans of the manga volumes are generally incomplete, and it's hard to tell whether there are one-panel cartoons on the inner cover or dust jacket flaps that are omitted, whether there's anything of interest on the volume title pages or plot synopsis page, and I just have to assume that there aren't any "omake" sections past the fourth volume, aside from the seperate book of 4koma mentioned above.

So, uh, yeah, if anyone wants to help me out there my obsessive brain defect will be much relieved.

So hey guys did you hear about DigitalLife? It's some kind of consumer electronics and video games trade show at the Javits Center in Manhattan this weekend and I'm planning to hit it up some time possibly with kanna and ahvia and xxbrinstarxx.

AND ALSO FREE TICKETS
So if you go to here:
http://www.digitallife.com/tickets.html
And enter this CODE in the box:
SHHH
seriously, SHHH , that's the code
Then you will get UP TO SIX free tickets. And all you need is an email address and a printer to get them. And I'm sure we all have at least one email address each. So basically they're giving away SIX TICKETS PER PERSON. what?

In other news, I have been reading the manga "Death Note" and while I had read the early parts before and formed great misgivings about the writer's ability and style, it's competently plotted... and around chapters 53 through 58, in which the gigantic spoiler occurs, the way the pieces fall together almost makes the whole thing worthwhile by itself.
Later on I may be posting a bunch of out-of-context panels. There are some pretty choice ones.

Survey stolen from nuriko_chan

Look at your LJ userpics list. If you have fewer than 50 icons, pick every fifth one. If you have between fifty and seventy-five icons, pick every seventh one. If you have over seventy-five icons, pick every tenth one. If you have fewer than twenty, pick all of 'em. List them on your LJ, and tell everyone exactly why you have it, why it's interesting to you, what significance does it have.

I'm tempted to upload a bunch of old icons and talk about them, but this post is turning out boring enough already.

Yuri Norstein - Tale of Tales.

This is one of the best animated films ever made and I love the little minotaur.

Dinosaur Comics.

I also wanted to make one from "And then we had dinosaur sex!" but I couldn't fit the speech bubble and text into 100x100 legibly.

Bandai diecast metal Gundam robot toy.

This one sucks, actually. I need a better Gundam icon, and/or a better chogokin icon.

original by me.

What the hell, apparantly I opened a time capsule from sixteen-year-old me and it told me to make that. I have no idea.

original by me.

HE JUST DOES, OKAY? this is from after I had been dressed as Snake from Metal Gear Solid 3 at a convention and people liked it. I was surprised how much people liked this icon, actually.

Guilty Gear XX.

This is what is on the screen when I-No does Megalomania. I love this graphic so much, and it's applicable to pretty much everything on the internet.

Family Guy.

I downloaded this entire episode just so I could get a screencap of Chris in that one scene; I couldn't find a cap of it on the web. I identify so much with this sentiment of ceasing to muddle through a situation, to just throw up your hands in despair and quit. The delivery of the line is also great.

AP, Reuters, Corbis? I dunno.

I never use this. Wtf. I guess I made it just because I found a photo of a sad panda?

designer unknown, redrawn by me.

This is printed on cheap plastic bags I get at stores sometimes. How great is that graphic? What is it even supposed to be? A big happy orange, maybe?

Kimigabuchi - "Azumanga Drifting Classroom" doujinshi.

I don't know who translated these scans. But I do know the circle who produced it, and they get credit for this bit, which is absolutely perfect for Osaka.

Charles Schulz - Peanuts.

Does this really require explanation? <3 Marcie.

original by me.

I actually sort of have a desire to not explain this one. I feel like you see it, or you don't.

Ico.

I love this game so much that, unable to take screencaps, I had to snap photos of the TV screen.

Katsuhiro Otomo - Akira.

Yamagata is the fucking man. Then he goes down like a punk, and it is sad. YAMAGATAAAAAAAAAAAAAA--

Toy Story.

This one is old, but I just uploaded it to show someone. Why doesn't anyone write dirty fanfic about the Potatoheads?

Nutrocker (the Maschinen Krieger movie) on bittorrent

I'm sure maybe four people on my friends list even care about this, but I have nothing much else to post about so here we go.

"S.F.3.D original video: Nutrocker"; English & German dialogue; Japanese subtitles.

http://www.deadfrog.us/index.php?act=entry&id=7035

This short film is based on Kow Yokoyama's "SF3D"/"Maschinen Krieger" series of design illustrations and model dioramas, originally published in articles in Hobby Japan magazine in the 80s. Tons of stop-motion animation, like the first Terminator movie.

The story follows a rebel SAFS ("Super Armored Fighting Suit") pilot stranded alone after a battle between the Strahl Democratic Republic military and the "mercenary forces" of the rebellion against Strahl. He heads for cover after spotting a Strahl land-hovercraft, a "Nutrocker". The Nutrocker is massive and tank-like, but still far outmatches the powered suit in speed, and can easily detect the SAFS. Fortunately, the pilot can talk to the SAFS like Luke talks to R2-D2. Unfortunately, he's bickering with the computer like they're married, he's only got three charges left for his laser, and his athlete's foot is itching like crazy.

posting a legendary fail

So it's six in the morning and of all the godawful things I could be doing, I'm posting to let you know that I'm back to reading other people's Livejournals and posting in my own. I just read through my friends page as far back as it would display, and with new filters set up I should be able to actually keep up with all of you (to a certain degree; the filters are designed so that I can easily leave out people who I don't know as well).

Man. Two days ago I stayed up all night to put all my portfolio pieces back online - this time I don't even know what I did for the last five hours. Oh well, I'll be back later today hopefully with less failureism, and sometime soon I'll have a regular blog on my website that I guess I can make an LJ feed for.

Also um oh man a lot of stuff has really been not mentioned in this journal but whatever, pretty much the important stuff is that I'm living uptown now and I already posted about that, so... uh... anyone want to hang out?

time to be dorky

This Japanese cosplay website features a decade's worth of high level costume craft by a woman who calls herself Shin', with choices of subject matter that are often incredible. This person has good taste and I'm really impressed by how ambitious some of her projects are.
I figured I might as well post this because I know about a dozen people to whom I'd be sending links from it anyway, and this is really much easier, and I know there are people here on LJ who I don't talk to that often who will be interested.
Speaking of people I never get to talk to anymore who gotta look at this... I'm looking at you, dressdragn

This Ghost in the Shell outfit absolutely blows my mind. I don't know if it's even appropriate to call it an outfit, since it's a full-body suit creating the illusion that an outer layer of artificial skin has been partially stripped off of a metal structure. I've certainly seen this attempted before, sometimes successfully, but never this well by a non-professional. The photography is beautiful, too.
Here's one more photo that's not as good but shows the details of the front of the costume a little better.
(By the way, it's based on this action figure and this poster for the first GITS movie.)

Here's another one that knocks my socks off, Ryuk from Death Note. Full-head mask that leaves her blind, according to web-translation of the page, and all the clothes handmade.

And in case that wasn't scary enough, here's Gollum, as depicted in the LOTR movies. Holy freakin' crap, man. With how the prosthetics change the shape of her face, hands and feet, it's hard to even see the person within the costume.

I'm also in awe of her Kaiko and Sanshi from 12 Kingdoms.

As for the rest of this, there isn't anything else quite as intense as those five, and pretty much any page on the site has well-made clothing items, so I'm posting pretty much just stuff that I like for a particular reason or intend to send someone else to look at later on.

She's done many other Ghost in the Shell costumes, including a ton of outfits from the recent Stand Alone Complex TV series, including the one with black pants, the one with white pants, the one with no pants, the black combat suit, the silver ghostdive gear (based on an eyecatch in the TV series), and the Mandarin dress.

It's amazing how much some people can change their appearance by hairstyling and the cut of clothing; compare this male character from Cafe Kichijouji or this one from "Heaven?" to, for instance, this version of Lust from Full Metal Alchemist. It's also little weird how much older and younger she can look from photo to photo, but I'm not going to bother to point out examples of that.

kanna will appreciate these, one costume from D.Gray-Man and another one.

Various anime/manga/game:

Shadow Lady's Cat Shadow form and Bunny Shadow form

Queen Bee from Vampire Saviour/Darkstalkers

Pudding from Space Channel 5 Part 2 (and again)

Ora from Clover with a nice prop: one version and another one.

Various American TV and film:

A couple of Star Wars Twi'lek women, from Return of the Jedi and The Phantom Menace

Star Trek: TNG's Beverly Crusher

The stewardesses from The Fifth Element once and again

Violet from The Incredibles

Elrond from the LOTR films once and again - I can't believe she can pull that off!

Niobi from the Matrix movies

Long Sky from Hero

Storm as seen in the second X-Men movie

The witch from Disney's Sleeping Beauty

And speaking of Disney, her maskless Donald Duck is ridiculously cute.

By the way, in case anyone is wondering about her costumes' provenance, given the prevalence of professionally made character costumes among Japanese fans, this website clearly represents crafter as well as wearer. Her costume pages all seem to indicate what was handmade and what was purchased, and there's a section with examples of her made-to-order costumes and instructions for commissioning.

James Kochalka's new song, Hockey Monkey, is totally awesome.

Here is an LJ icon pretty much ripped from the flash movie on the page linked above.

come on pretty baby now, call my bluff

So I know I'm really bad at keeping up with this thing but I thought some of you might appreciate being informed that I'm not gonna be around at all this weekend. Going to Jersey thursday night, leaving the state friday morning, and going to Tekkoshocon and seeing harotype and nidaram.

If anyone wants to jump on last minute as my co-pilot, you're perfectly welcome to. Just get in contact with me ASAP. I don't realistically expect anyone to answer this, as much as I'd like a driving partner, because I think I already asked everyone I know who'd conceivably go and they all have school or work.

Anyway, I'll finish this with long-overdue pictures. You remember how to look at pictures, right?

holy shit this program (edevix) we use as an interface to our stock and orders database, it makes the ugliest html ever.

it adds font tags around images. it adds font tags around blank space. it makes a seperate paragraph tag with a nbsp in it and a font tag around the nbsp for... well, actually, i don't know why it keeps making those. if you try to format your html with tabs and line breaks so it can be read by a human, it'll run it all together into one line.

the office fridge is full of Red Bull; this reminds me of have you ever done cocaine Lyle? i have done cocaine

TOMORROW I SHALL REMAKE THE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION AFTER MINE OWN IMAGE
